Does a third-party repair void your warranty? UK rights, explained
"But won't that void my warranty?" is the second-most-asked question in phone repair, and the industry benefits from the confusion in both directions — manufacturers imply more than the law allows, and some repair shops promise more than it protects. Here's what's actually true for UK consumers in 2026.
The short version
An independent repair does not automatically void your manufacturer warranty in the UK. What the manufacturer can do is refuse warranty service for damage the repair caused — if a third party fits a battery badly and it damages the board, that consequence isn't Apple's problem. What they can't lawfully do is refuse to fix an unrelated fault just because someone else once opened the phone. A camera failure isn't excused by last year's screen repair.
Your rights against the retailer under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — up to six years for faults present at purchase — survive an independent repair the same way.
The honest caveats
In practice, manufacturers sometimes make it awkward: service centres may note non-genuine parts, and on iPhones iOS displays parts-history notices for non-genuine components. Awkward isn't the same as lawful refusal, but it's friction worth knowing about. Apple's own out-of-warranty prices are also the benchmark that makes this debate matter — their screen pricing is typically double an independent's.
The clean decision rule: phone still under warranty or AppleCare and the fault is covered? Use the manufacturer — we say this to customers weekly, and any honest shop should. Out of warranty (which is most phones we see, since cover runs 12–24 months and phones live 4–6 years)? Independent repair is your right, usually at half the price, and with us the screen carries a 24-month warranty — longer than the manufacturer offers on the same repair.
What to expect from a repair warranty
A repair warranty should cover the part fitted and the workmanship — ours run 24 months on screens, 12 on batteries, 90 days on other repairs, in writing in our repair terms. It shouldn't cover new accidental damage, and no honest one does. Keep your booking confirmation as the record; with us the repair ID and its history do that automatically.
And whoever repairs your phone: back up first. Every reputable shop says it, because it's the advice that costs nothing and saves everything.

Does a third-party screen repair void my Apple warranty?+
Not automatically. Apple can refuse warranty service for damage the repair caused, but not for unrelated faults — UK consumer law doesn't allow blanket refusal because a third party opened the phone.
Should I use Apple or an independent for my repair?+
In warranty with a covered fault: use Apple, every time. Out of warranty: an independent with quality parts and a written warranty typically does the same repair at half the price — ask what warranty the repair itself carries.
Do repairs affect my Consumer Rights Act protection?+
Your CRA rights are against the retailer for faults present at purchase, and they survive an independent repair — though the retailer can dispute faults an incompetent repair caused. Keep repair records either way.
