Refurbished iPhone or Samsung Galaxy? The 2026 buyer's answer

New-phone comparisons obsess over spec sheets. Refurbished comparisons should obsess over something else: depreciation. The phone that loses value fastest when new is the phone that gains you most when used — and that single fact flips the usual iPhone-versus-Samsung debate on its head.

Depreciation: Samsung is the refurbished bargain

iPhones hold value stubbornly — good news when you sell, worse news when you buy used. Samsung flagships routinely shed 40–50% in their first year, so a Galaxy S23 or S24 delivers flagship hardware at mid-range money. Pound for pound, recent Galaxies are the strongest value in our shop.

The flip side: when you eventually trade in, the iPhone returns more of your money. If you upgrade every couple of years, iPhone's resale value quietly refunds part of the premium you paid.

Updates: the gap has closed

Apple's six-to-seven-year iOS support used to end this argument. No longer: Samsung commits to seven years of OS and security updates from the Galaxy S24 onward, and Google does the same for recent Pixels. A refurbished S24 now carries a software lifespan that matches an iPhone's.

For older models the old rule still applies — a Galaxy S22's remaining support is shorter than an iPhone 13's, so check the launch year before assuming parity.

Cameras, ecosystem, and the things specs miss

Cameras: iPhone wins for video, consistency and the shot you didn't set up; Galaxy Ultras win for zoom and versatility; Pixels win for point-and-shoot stills. All three are excellent — buy for the kind of photo you actually take.

Ecosystem is the honest tiebreaker. AirPods, Apple Watch, iMessage and a house full of Apple kit make an iPhone the low-friction choice; if you live in Google services or own a Galaxy Watch, Android repays you the same way. The phone is one node in a system you've already chosen.

Repair costs and the long game

Repairs favour Apple slightly: iPhone parts are plentiful and standardised, so an iPhone 14 screen costs less to replace than a curved Galaxy AMOLED. Check our fixed repair prices for any model before you buy — a phone you can fix cheaply is a phone that lasts.

Our verdict for 2026: buying on pure value, take the Galaxy. Buying to keep for five-plus years or already inside Apple's walls, take the iPhone. Either way, certified refurbished with a published grade, stated battery health and a 24-month warranty beats new on value — the brand is the smaller decision.
