Refurbished Samsung Galaxy: which model to buy in 2026 (and which to skip)

Samsung flagships are the best value in refurbished phones, and it is not close. They lose value faster than iPhones in year one — the same phone, the same screen, the same cameras, for hundreds less twelve months later — and since 2024 Samsung has backed its flagships with seven years of Android and security updates. That combination is unusual: steep depreciation with long support means a two-year-old Galaxy can cost half its launch price and still have five years of cover left.

This guide covers which models are worth buying now, what the update promise actually means, and the handful of things worth checking that are specific to Samsung.

The seven-year promise, and which phones actually have it

Samsung committed the Galaxy S24 series and everything flagship since to seven years of OS and security updates from launch. For an S24 released in January 2024, that runs to around 2031. The S25 Ultra runs to around 2032.

Older models had shorter commitments: the S23 generation got four Android versions and five years of security patches, so support runs to roughly 2028. That is still longer than most people keep a phone, but it is the single biggest reason to pay the extra for an S24 over an S23 if the price gap is small.

The practical test: if you keep phones three years or less, support length should not drive your choice — buy on price and camera. If you keep them five years or more, buy an S24 or newer.

Galaxy S23: the budget pick that still feels flagship

The S23 is the most underrated refurbished Android phone on the market. It is compact by modern standards at 6.1 inches, has a 120Hz AMOLED screen, a 50MP main camera with a genuine 3× optical telephoto, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 — which was fast enough that a 2026 buyer will not notice it is three years old.

It is also the last Samsung flagship that used Snapdragon everywhere, which matters to some buyers (see below). Support runs to about 2028. Buy it if you want a small, fast, well-built phone and do not need the phone to last past 2028. See live stock on our Galaxy S23 page.

Galaxy S24: the one most people should buy

The S24 is the sweet spot. Brighter 2600-nit screen, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (in the UK; some regions got Exynos), the same 50MP + 3× telephoto camera system, and the seven-year update promise that takes it to 2031. It also introduced the Galaxy AI features Samsung has kept updating since.

Galaxy S24 Ultra: the camera and S Pen flagship, now sensible money

The Ultra is a different class of phone: 6.8-inch screen, titanium frame, a 200MP main camera with both 5× and 3× optical zoom, and the S Pen built into the body. It launched at £1,249 and has depreciated harder than any iPhone Pro Max ever has.

If you photograph anything at distance — sport, wildlife, kids on a stage — nothing at this price competes with the 5× lens. Support to around 2031. Galaxy S25 Ultra: buy it only if you want the newest

The S25 Ultra improves the chip to Snapdragon 8 Elite, adds a 50MP ultrawide and stretches the screen to 6.9 inches with thinner bezels and rounder corners. What it removes are the S Pen's Bluetooth remote features.

It is the fastest Android phone we stock, but the S24 Ultra keeps the same 200MP main camera, the same zoom range and the same titanium build for hundreds less. Unless you specifically want the latest silicon, the S24 Ultra is the better buy. Galaxy S25 Ultra stock.

Exynos vs Snapdragon: does it still matter?

Samsung has historically shipped some regions with its own Exynos chip and others with Qualcomm's Snapdragon. In the UK, the S23 and S24 generations shipped with Snapdragon; other models have varied by year and region.

The performance gap narrowed considerably after 2023 and, for messaging, browsing, photos and video, you would not be able to tell them apart. It shows up in sustained gaming and in battery efficiency under load. If it matters to you, check the model number on the listing before you buy — any honest seller will confirm it.

What to check on a refurbished Samsung specifically

Screen burn-in. AMOLED panels can retain faint ghosting of navigation bars or keyboards on heavily used handsets. It is uncommon on phones under three years old, but it is the one Samsung-specific fault worth asking about — and it is why we test displays at full white rather than on a busy home screen.

Battery health. Android does not expose a battery percentage the way iOS does, so a seller who states a figure should be able to say how they measured it. We take ours from diagnostic testing, not from an app estimate.

Knox and account lock. Like activation lock on an iPhone, a Samsung account left signed in makes the phone unusable to the next owner. Any phone we sell has been fully reset and verified clean.

Network lock. Ours are sold unlocked unless a listing says otherwise. Check before you buy anywhere else, because a locked Galaxy is worth noticeably less.

What a refurbished Galaxy should come with

A published grading standard rather than a vague 'excellent condition'. A stated battery figure. A warranty that covers faults rather than a 30-day 'dead on arrival' window. Returns that work if you change your mind. And full diagnostic testing, not a visual once-over.
