64GB, 128GB or 256GB: how much phone storage do you actually need?

Storage is the one spec you can't fix later. Battery? Replaceable. Scratches? Case. But a full phone is a daily tax — deleting photos to update apps, 'Storage Almost Full' at every wrong moment — and no cable ever made a 128GB phone into a 256GB one. Here's how to size it right the first time, with actual numbers.

What things really weigh

The operating system and preinstalled apps claim 12–20GB before you begin. A photo is 3–4MB; a minute of 4K video, 350–400MB — video is the storage killer, not photos. WhatsApp quietly hoards 5–15GB on most phones after a couple of years. Games are the heavyweights: a big title can be 4–10GB, while everyday apps average a few hundred MB each with their caches.

A typical two-year-old phone belonging to a normal human: 15GB system, 30GB photos and video, 10GB messaging media, 25GB apps and caches. That's 80GB — and it only grows.

The honest sizing guide

64GB suits only genuinely light users: calls, messages, banking, streaming rather than storing, photos backed up to the cloud and pruned. It's workable with discipline — and a false economy for anyone else in 2026.

128GB is the right answer for most people — comfortable headroom for years of photos, every app you'll actually use, and offline playlists, provided you're not a 4K-video hobbyist. It's the sweet spot of price to peace-of-mind, and it's where most of our stock sits.

256GB earns its premium for three groups: people who shoot lots of video, people who never delete anything (no judgement — know yourself), and people keeping the phone four-plus years. On a refurbished phone the step up costs far less than it does new, which changes the maths in its favour.

The cloud caveat

iCloud and Google Photos can genuinely halve your needs — 'optimise storage' keeps small previews on the phone and originals in the cloud. But it's a subscription forever, it needs signal to fetch originals, and a phone with a full drive still struggles to update iOS. The cloud stretches a size; it doesn't rescue a size too small.
