An eSIM does the same job as the little plastic SIM card you are used to, except it is built into the phone and set up digitally. It is quietly taking over — some newer phones have dropped the physical slot entirely — so it is worth understanding before you buy.

The practical differences

A physical SIM is a card you slot in and can swap between phones in seconds. An eSIM is activated by scanning a QR code or tapping a link from your network — no card to lose, and you can store several eSIMs on one phone and switch between them in the settings.
