Is a refurbished iPhone 14 still worth buying in 2026?
The iPhone 14 launched in September 2022 for £849. Today a tested & certified one from us starts at about £305 — roughly a third of the launch price for a phone that, in most of the ways you'd notice, still behaves like a current iPhone. The question is whether 'most of the ways' is enough for you.
What still holds up
The A15 chip is the same one Apple shipped in the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone SE (2022), and it's still fast enough that iOS feels instant; apps open without a stutter and games run fine. The 6.1-inch OLED screen is bright and sharp. The 12MP main camera is a step behind the 48MP sensors in newer models on paper, but in daylight the photos are excellent and it has the same Photonic Engine processing as the 14 Pro.
You also get Face ID, MagSafe, 5G, crash detection and Emergency SOS via satellite — features that were headline news at launch and that cheaper Android phones still don't match.
What's dated
Three things. The Lightning port: every iPhone from the 15 onwards uses USB-C, so you'll be keeping a separate cable around. The notch: the 14 has the older cut-out rather than the Dynamic Island. And the 60Hz screen, which is the same as every non-Pro iPhone up to the 16 — so not a real disadvantage against those.
No Apple Intelligence, either. If Apple's AI features matter to you, the cheapest way in is a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro, not a 14.
How long will it keep getting updates?
This is the question that decides whether a four-year-old phone is a bargain or a trap. Apple has historically supported iPhones with major iOS versions for six to seven years from launch, and with security patches beyond that. On that track record an iPhone 14 bought today should see major updates into 2028 and security updates for a while after — a comfortable three years of ownership.
The bigger practical limit is the battery. Check the health figure on the listing: at 85%+ you've got years left; below 80% budget for a replacement, which is a cheap fix that resets the clock.
Who it's right for
Anyone coming from an iPhone 11 or older — the jump is enormous. Parents buying a first proper phone. Anyone who wants an iPhone under £320 without going back to a Lightning-era SE. If you're spending your own money and want it to last, the 14 at ~£305 is a genuinely good deal; the iPhone 15 at ~£400 is the step up if USB-C and the newer camera are worth £95 to you.

Will the iPhone 14 get iOS updates in 2027?+
Based on Apple's usual six-to-seven-year support window, yes — and security updates typically continue after major iOS updates stop.
iPhone 14 or iPhone 13 — is the 14 worth the extra?+
They're close: same chip, same screen size. The 14 has a better main camera, better battery and crash detection. If the price gap is under £60, take the 14; otherwise the 13 is the bargain.
